Bernalillo County’s economy is expected to get a big boost this fall when a national wholesale food distribution company expands operations in the South Valley. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, for construction of a $20.5 million U.S. Foodservice facility. U.S. Foodservice currently operates a smaller, leased space near 2nd Street and Montano in the North Valley but will close that and relocate to a newly purchased piece of county property at 3700 Prince Street SE once the work is completed. Bernalillo County Commissioner Art De La Cruz has worked with the county’s economic development department and state officials for nearly a year to make the plan a reality.
“I am committed to creating more jobs in the South Valley. This is tangible proof. A large scale, state-of-the-art facility is moving in and the local economy will greatly benefit from its presence,” says Commissioner De La Cruz.
The more than 137,000 square foot facility is expected to be up and running by October or November. Additionally, the company has plans to more than double its South Valley plant size and add 100 more jobs after five years.
U.S. Foodservice, a privately owned company with 65 distribution centers throughout the nation, will employ up to 190 people at the new location—as many as 40 more than the 150 who currently work at the North Valley site. Bernalillo County’s economic development department says the project will generate millions of dollars for the local economy in the way of more jobs, increased tax revenue, and additional businesses.
Media will be allowed to photograph operations inside the current U.S. Foodservice facility. To make those arrangements, please contact Mark at U.S. Foodservice at (505) 343-2281.
