Bernalillo County and the New Mexico Hospitality Retailers Association are providing free rides to and from local establishments this St. Patrick’s Day in an effort to keep drunken and drugged drivers off the streets. This is the first time the “Pick Me Up Take Me Out – Pick Me Up Take Me Home” program has been offered on St. Patrick’s Day. The rides to the establishments will be available from 5:00 this afternoon to 9:00 tonight. The rides home will be available from 5:00 this afternoon to 3:00 tomorrow morning.
To schedule your free ride for up to four passengers call ABQ Cab at 242-7433. Your server will contact the cab company when you are ready to go home. The program is only available in Bernalillo County.
New Mexico continues to be plagued by dismal DWI numbers. The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that New Mexico ranked 12th among the 50 states for total crash deaths per 100,000 residents in 2009, down from 11th in 2008. However, New Mexico’s 2009 rate of total crash deaths per 100,000 residents remained 63-percent higher than the national rate of 11-percent.
