Rio Grande Indoor Pool

Rio Grande Indoor Pool
2312 Arenal Road SW
Albuquerque, NM  87105
(505) 314-0169

The Bernalillo County Aquatics program follows the National Lightning Safety Institute recommendations for its indoor and outdoor pools.

  • When a lightning storm is recognized and identified, Aquatics management will designate an employee as the responsible weather safety lookout, along with the use of an inclement weather and lightning tracking device.

  • When lightning or thunder is first noticed, county staff will use the flash to bang method to determine its distance. Any count 30 seconds and under following the flash to bang method, the pools shall be evacuated immediately and all pool users shall be directed to a safe location.

  • All pool activities will remain suspended until 30 minutes after the last thunderclap is heard. If no further lightning or thunder is recognized, all pool activities will resume.

Rio Grade Pool Construction Project Updates

January 16, 2015:

The Rio Grande Indoor Pool renovation project is in full swing and moving toward its expected completion in April, 2015.

The replacement of the roof and new skylight installation is ongoing. Structural work is being done above the men’s shower room and mechanical room in anticipation of the new mechanical unit. The new mechanical unit will regulate humidity in the pool area and is much larger and more efficient than the old one.

Roofing and structural work over the pool, shower rooms and mechanical room should be complete by Jan. 22, 2015, depending on the weather. Installation of a new roof over the fitness center will begin after that.

Once the roof is on, the mechanical units will be ready for installation, the pool deck can be poured, pool tiling can resume, pool mechanical equipment can be installed and upgrades to the shower rooms can begin.

The pool’s drainage system is currently being installed. The existing stairs and platform for the water slide are being re-furbished and will installed next month. In March the new slide will be put in.

Don Kindler, Project Superintendent from Weil Construction, says that once the roof is finished there will be significant progress on the inside of the building. Construction is scheduled to be completed by  April, 2015.

July 9, 2014:

The Rio Grande Indoor Pool construction project is scheduled to begin in late July, 2014.

This pool is the only indoor swimming pool in Bernalillo County’s Aquatics Program, and is located on the campus of Rio Grande High School, 2312 Arenal Road SW.

Demolition of the old pool was completed in late 2013.

Bernalillo County will build a new pool so that it will be a safe attraction to the recreational and competitive swimmer, meet current building and Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, and be more energy efficient. The renovations will provide a completely new pool, including a new slide, designed to provide the high school swim team with a home pool that meets competition standards. In addition to a new pool, the building will receive a new roof, heating, cooling and ventilation systems.

Project Renderings:

Phase 2 of the Rio Grande Indoor Pool construction project is scheduled to begin in late July 2014. The old pool was drained and demolished in late 2013. The old Rio Grande Indoor Pool was built in 1975 and had reached the end of its useful life. The new construction project is scheduled for completion by the spring of 2015. The cost of this project is $3.6 million. This will fund the construction of a new pool, including a competitive pool, slide and separate aerobics area.

Funding sources include $2.9 million from the county’s general fund; $300,000 in state capital outlay grants; $200,000 from Albuquerque Public Schools and $200,000 from the City of Albuquerque.

The pool is being replaced because after 38 years, the operation and maintenance of a safe pool for Bernalillo County residents was becoming difficult and expensive. This project will provide a completely new pool designed to provide the high school swim team with a home pool that meets competition standards and a safe recreational facility for the community.

In addition to a new pool, the building will receive a new roof, heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
