 Mission Statement:

The primary mission of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department includes the protection of life and property; resolution of conflict; creating and maintaining a feeling of security in the community; proactively reducing the opportunities for the commission of crime; identification, apprehension and prosecution of offenders of laws; and the preservation of peace. We accept as part of our msision to work and preserve a quality of life in our community.

Services (What We Do):

The customer we serve is the safety and welfare of the general public of Bernalillo County. As with any business, we value and respect the needs of our customers and continously strive to provide them with public safety services in an effective, efficient and timely manner.

• Headquarters is the executive branch of the Sheriff's Department that works for Bernalillo County. Headquarters provides all public information requests and manages the following: legal counsel, public information officer, grant unit, billings for reimbursable overtime, internal affairs and maintaining the integrity of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department.
• Metro Air Unit provides the following services: air support for thousands of emergency situations such as law enforcement, firefighters, search and rescue, special weapons, tactics support, and emergency response team deployments. In addition to performing law enforcement actitivies, the Metro Air Unit supports Animal Services, Zoning, and youth/community programs.
• Field Services provides all patrol and traffic-related activities including: DWI Unit, SWAT, Street Crimes Detective Unit, Canine, Crossing Guards, Community Service Aides and Reserves.
• Criminal Investigation Division provides the following services: Violent Crimes, Homicide and Special Victims Units; Narcotics; Crime Scene Investigations; White Collar Crime; Gang Unit; Sexual Offenders Registration Tracking Unit; participation in the Federal Bureau of Investigations Task Force; and the Drug Enforcement Agency's Task Force.
• Judicial Operations Division provides the following services: civil process, District Court/Juvenile Court security, extradictions of prisoners, Warrants section, Crime Analysis Unit, and District Attorney Liaison Unit.
• Professional Standards Division provides the following services: BCSO Regional Training Academy; in-service training, DARE/GREAT programs, range, armory, school resource officers, radio and fleet maintenance, recruitment, and the Administration Section which includes inventory, contracts, supplies, budget, grants, finance, purchasing, payroll and personnel records management, photo/video technical support, IT support, web design and GPS monitoring.

Enacting Legislation:

New Mexico State Statute 4-41-2. The sheriff shall be conservator of the peace within his county; shall suppress assaults and batteries, and apprehend and commit to jail, all felons and traitors, and cause all offenders to keep the peace and to appear at the next term of the court and answer such charges as may be preferred against them.
