Join Bernalillo County, the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Library System and the National Hispanic Cultural Center in the “Big Read” sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. Now’s your chance to participate in the biggest book club in the state. Bernalillo County invites you to read “Bless Me Ultima” by renowned New Mexico author, Rudolfo Anaya.
The Kick Off event will be held on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at Rio Bravo Park from 5:00 -7:00 pm. Special events will be held through the month of September at community centers, libraries and book stores.
The Closing Event will be held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at 7:00 pm and Rudolfo Anaya will read from “Bless Me Ultima.” Receiption will begin at 6:00 pm.
The story is about a boy, Antonio Mares, growing up in Guadalupe, New Mexico during the 1940s who develops a close relationship with an old woman who comes to live with his family, Ultima. Ultima is a “curandera,” someone who is believed to be able to heal people by using natural herbs and magic. Through Ultima, Antonio begins searching for answers to some of life’s most difficult questions
