Substance Abuse Programs

The Supportive Aftercare Community (SAC) program is a low-intensity residential service social model program that is designed to allow the clients to remain in a supportive recovery environment after completing alcohol and drug detoxification and/or rehabilitative services.

This program provides clients with the opportunity to reintegrate back into the community as productive drug-free members of the community. The program provides a structured living environment that emphasizes daily living skills and long-term management of recovery through life skills training geared for substance abuse recovery clients. The modality used for classes in SAC is the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA). 

Program participation in the Supportive Aftercare Community (SAC) program is voluntary and is provided at no cost to qualifying New Mexico residents seeking a supportive recovery environment after completing alcohol and drug detoxification and/or rehabilitative services. Potential clients are screened by a team to ensure appropriateness for the level of care and support provided at the facility. Clients may be referred to SAC from Turquoise Lodge, other DSAP programs, or other referral agencies. Any New Mexico resident, age 18 or over, who has had an inability to maintain post-treatment recovery in their respective community and who is in need of continued supportive care can apply. Program admission requires proof of tuberculosis clearance.

Generally, program staff may not disclose to a person outside the program that a client attends the program, or disclose any information identifying a client as an alcohol or drug abuser unless: The client consents in writing (signed release of information (ROI) on file); the disclosure is allowed by a court order, including a search warrant; the disclosure is made to medical personnel in a medical emergency or to designated and qualified staff for research, audit, or program evaluation. Upon request by the client, discharge summaries or letters of completion may be given to the client and the client may then share copies of these items at their discretion. Absolutely no information pertaining to clients may be released over the phone. If someone besides Department of Substance Abuse staff inquires as to whether a person is in SAC, inquires about the person’s progress, asks about past participation in SAC, or asks any other questions about SAC clients, the standard answer will be that staff can neither confirm nor deny the person’s presence at SAC.
