BernCo Youth Services Center Receives High Assessment Scores

    11/14/2017

The American Correctional Association and the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections recently completed a standards compliance reaccreditation audit on the Bernalillo County Youth Services Center to measure compliance on a number of mandatory and non-mandatory industry standards.

The Youth Services Center scored 100 percent on the mandatory standards, earning 28 of 28, and 373 out of 375 on the non-mandatory standards for a score of 99.5 percent.

“I want to congratulate the Bernalillo County Youth Services Center staff for their outstanding assessment scores,” says Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca. “The staff’s hard work and passion for the job they do really shows day in and day out, and now the corrections industry is once again validating the staff’s professionalism by awarding such high scores.”

The mandatory standards measure how the Youth Services Center takes care of the health, safety and wellbeing of the kids in the center’s custody. Non-compliance in any of the 28 mandatory standards would result in a failing score for the entire audit.

“I would like to give credit to and congratulate the staff as well. They work tirelessly every day with the kids in our facility,” says Youth Services Center Director Craig Sparks. “It is the staff’s interaction and genuine care for these kids that really shines during an audit such as this.”

The Youth Services Center will receive the formal accreditation in January 2018 in Orlando, FL, at the American Correctional Association Winter Conference.

The audit was conducted Nov. 6-8, 2017 by audit chairperson Ernest Umunna of Atlanta, GA, audit member Kellie Whitcomb of Logansport, IN and audit member John Moore of Columbia, SC.

The American Correctional Association audit process is voluntary for youth detention facilities around the country. The Bernalillo County Youth Services Center believes the audit helps the facility to excel by setting high standards and working diligently to meet the needs of the youth on a daily basis.
