BernCo Commission to Hold Special Meeting on “Democracy Dollars” Initiative

On Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m., the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting on the Democracy Dollars Initiative.

On Tuesday, Aug. 14, the County Commission voted 3-2 against adding the Democracy Dollars question to the November ballot. Commissioners Debbie O’Malley and Maggie Hart Stebbins voted in favor of adding the issue to the November ballot and have requested the Aug. 21 special commission meeting.

Both commissioners say they are trying to avoid a costly special election on the issue. By city charter, a special city election would be necessary if the County Commission does not allow the Democracy Dollars item on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.

If the commission votes against the measure for a second time on Tuesday, Aug. 21, the City of Albuquerque could be forced to hold a special election on or after Jan. 15, 2019, based on local government election law which says special elections have to occur either 70 days before or after a general election.

The Democracy Dollars Initiative is a proposal that would give registered voters in the City of Albuquerque $25 coupons to contribute to a publicly financed candidate of their choice.

The Tuesday, Aug. 21 special commission meeting will be held at One Civic Plaza in the Vincent E. Griego Chambers in the basement of the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Government Center.
