Mountain View Community Center Receives National Recognition as a Certified Nature Explore Classroom

BernCo and Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge partnered to create New Mexico’s first nature explore outdoor classroom. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Wednesday, June 28 at the Mountain View Community Center.

A nature explore outdoor classroom is a space that offers interactive elements for building and creating art - such as musical instruments made of natural materials, garden and pathway areas, and natural materials.

“Research consistently shows that children who learn and grow in nature explore classrooms like this one exhibit enhanced concentration, develop creativity and problem-solving techniques,” says Bernalillo County Vice Chair Steven Michael Quezada. “Children exposed to nature explore classrooms also learn to manage stress in healthy ways and develop skills across the spectrum of academic and creative learning.”

The garden has received national certification from the Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation.

This certification confers upon Mountain View Community Center a number of benefits, including membership in an ever-expanding network of more than 380 like-minded spaces nationwide. These Certified Nature Explore Classrooms foster highly effective, nature-based outdoor learning. Dimensions Educational Research Foundation was instrumental in the design and function of the classroom.
