Route 66 Visitor Center Project Phase I Receives Additional County Support

The Board of County Commissioners earmarked $1.5 million from the general fund to further support the construction of the Route 66 Visitor Center.

The $1.5 million has been set aside while a comprehensive marketing analysis on the Visitor Center is conducted.

The additional funds bring the county’s contribution total to approximately $3.3 million.

The estimated cost of phase I construction is about $12 million. Currently, there is $8.3 million in the project budget and the earmarked county reserve will help to reduce the shortfall. To date, the State of New Mexico has contributed $2.6 million and the City of Albuquerque has committed just under $4 million toward the project.

The project’s phase I design includes a 21,500 square foot facility consisting of:

  • Exhibit space
  • Gift shop
  • Taproom
  • Assembly space for up to 300 people
  • Commercial kitchen
  • Administrative space

The outdoor area consists of:

  • 300-seat amphitheater
  • Drive-in movie screen
  • Parking for visitors, food trucks and RVs
  • Landscaping

“The proposed Route 66 Visitor Center and all of its amenities will attract both locals and tourists alike. It has the potential to provide an economic boost to the entire community and will be a win-win investment for Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque,” states Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada.

The project is a collaborative effort between Bernalillo County, City of Albuquerque, State of New Mexico and local stakeholders, Southwest Alliance of Neighbors (SWAN) and the West Central Community Development Group, to create a space that celebrates Route 66 while serving the local community.
