BernCo Board of Commissioners Recognizes Nov. 17 as National Adoption Day

At its Nov. 13 administrative meeting the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, as National Adoption Day.

National Adoption Day is a collective, nationwide effort to raise awareness of the more than 438,000 children across the country who are in foster care today; and each year 20,000 youth will age out of the foster care system in the USA.

In New Mexico roughly 2,500 children are in the foster care system, many of which are still in need of a safe, loving and permanent family.

The Children’s Court Division of New Mexico’s Second Judicial District Court has celebrated National Adoption Day since 2003 and has completed 3,045 adoptions to date.

On this special day, children from across Bernalillo County will be adopted by loving families, further strengthening our community and the social fabric throughout Bernalillo County.

The Honorable Judges Marie Ward, John J. Romero, Jr. and William Parnall have overseen 95 adoptions thus far in 2018.

The Second Judicial District Court, including judges, social workers, lawyers, deputies and all court employees are passionate and motivated to serve children and families, and have given the people of Bernalillo County hope for a more rewarding and promising future.

The foster families and adoptive families of Bernalillo County have stepped forward to care for our community’s most vulnerable children, and should be honored as the heroes they are.
