Community Celebrates Second Street SW Corridor Improvements

04/30/2019

The community and local elementary school students joined officials to celebrate the recent completion of $8.5 million in improvements to the Second Street SW corridor.

Corridor improvements included the design and construction of a multi-use trail from the Valle de Oro Wildlife Refuge entrance to Mountain View Elementary School, installing storm drainage and the reconstruction of Second Street from the Valle de Oro Wildlife Refuge entrance to Desert Road, realignment of the Desert Road and Second Street intersection, and the construction of sidewalks along the west side of Second Street.

This $8.5 million project was 85% funded by the Federal Highway Administration's Federal Land Access Program (FLAP) fund and 15% fund matched by Bernalillo County.

“The entire community benefits when this level of infrastructure investment is made in our neighborhoods,” says District 2 Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada. “Travel by vehicle, bike or on foot is safer and all of the landscape beautification encourages residents to get outside.”

BernCo also announced the awarding of a second grant of $4 million for phase two of the Second Street Federal Lands Access Program Project, the total cost of the project is estimated at $8 million. Phase two of the project will pick up where phase one ended, at the South Diversion Channel, and extend the same improvements north to Rio Bravo Boulevard.

Additional projects in progress along the Second Street SW corridor:

  • Extending the Second Street trail and putting in landscaping – projects totaling about $1.2 million
  • The Nature Conservancy is doing an Urban Tree Planting Project, in collaboration with Mountain View residents -- 200 trees will be planted along Second Street in the next two years, by the fall of 2020
  • In the works is the Second Street / Rio Bravo Boulevard Intersection Project – at an estimated cost of $3 million
  • And, just recently, the approval of an additional capital outlay totaling $1 million for improvements in the Mountain View area
