May Proclaimed as Motorcycle Awareness Month

05/28/2019

At its May 28 administrative meeting, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners proclaimed May 2019 as Motorcycle Awareness Month and encouraged all drivers to be observant, courteous and knowledgeable about the growing number of motorcyclists on our roadways in order to help prevent accidents and, most importantly, save lives.

Motorcycles are a common means of transportation for commuting, touring and recreation in and around Bernalillo County, and the motorcycle riding for pleasure on the scenic roadways of Bernalillo County is popular among locals and out of state riders alike.

The safe operation of a motorcycle requires the use of acquired skills, common sense and good judgment, and thorough knowledge of traffic laws and licensing requirements. Safe riding practices and cooperation from all motorists attribute to the reduction in fatalities and injuries on our highways, and, by raising awareness, both drivers and riders will be safer while sharing the road.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, motorcycle fatalities in 2017 totaled close to 5,000 but decreased by almost 300 from 2016. Speeding is a contributing factor in two-thirds of single vehicle/motorcycle accidents and 60% occur in the nighttime hours. In motorcycle fatalities, 61% of drivers were wearing helmets, but only 31% of passengers were helmeted.

It is vitally important that all residents of Bernalillo County be aware, show consideration, and share the road with motorcycles and recognize the importance of motorcycle safety.
