Commissioner Hart Stebbins' Priorities

Maggie Hart Stebbins has represented District 3 on the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners since 2009

A resident of her UNM-area neighborhood since 1966, she attended Montezuma Elementary, Our Lady of Fatima, the Albuquerque Academy and Harvard University, where she was an All-American athlete and recipient of the prestigious Radcliffe Alumni Association Award for athletic excellence and leadership.

Maggie came to the commission with extensive experience in public service. Her background includes work for the U.S. Congress, the New Mexico House of Representatives, and the Mid-Region Council of Governments, where she focused on air quality, water conservation and regional transportation.

Maggie is dedicated to creating and preserving jobs in Bernalillo County. In her time on the commission, she has focused on raising the standard of living by investing in local businesses to help them succeed and grow with a particular focus on our cultural economy. She has worked to establish smart economic development investments that bring new employers to the county. For example, in 2011, she spearheaded the effort that brought Lowes Home Improvement Centers and nearly 1000 new jobs to Bernalillo County.

Maggie sponsored a comprehensive overhaul of Bernalillo County's ethics ordinance to establish clear and enforceable standards of behavior so taxpayers can be sure that their public resources are being used appropriately. In 2010, she led the effort to create the County's on-line Transparency Portal, "BernCo View", that provides easy, convenient access to all county expenditures, records, and documents.However, her favorite accomplishment during her time on the commission is the county's recent partnership with the University of New Mexico to preserve the UNM North Golf Course as open space.

She brings to Bernalillo County her years of experience that are important in the daily lives of all Bernalillo County residents, including tax reform, education, economic development, domestic violence prevention, open space and natural resources, and public safety issues.

Maggie is dedicated to protecting the natural beauty and cultural integrity of Bernalillo County as it continues to grow. She has worked extensively on public transportation issues, including enabling legislation for New Mexico's Regional Transit Districts and the planning and implementation of the New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter rail service.

In addition to her public service background, Maggie has been active in many community organizations. She has served on several public and private boards, including the New Mexico Children's Foundation, the New Mexico Mutual Group Board of Directors, Albuquerque's Open Space and Biopark Advisory Boards, the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court Judicial Selection Commission, and the local YWCA. She has been happily married to Eric Stebbins for more than 20 years and they are raising their four children in District 3.
