Board of Commissioners Recognizes 100th Observance of Armistice Day on Nov. 11

At its Oct. 24 administrative meeting the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners formally recognized the 100th observance of the end of World War I and proclaimed Nov. 11, 2018, as Armistice Day in Bernalillo County. The board asked all county residents to offer two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on that day to honor and remember those who served, those who serve our country today both here and overseas, and especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of democracy and freedom.

More than century ago, 4.7 million Americans bravely answered our nation’s call to engage in a war in Europe that evolved into the world’s first great global conflict—World War I. More than 17 million soldiers and civilians were killed during WWI. At least 116,500 American service members lost their lives in the war, 502 of whom came from New Mexico. The New Mexican soldiers who fought in WWI were recognized for their bravery, fearlessness, and, thanks to their rural upbringing, their ruggedness and outstanding marksmanship.

This year, Nov. 11 marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month that brought an end to the war.

The loss of life and destructiveness of WWI led many to believe it would be “the war to end all wars” with the hope that the horrors of the conflict would convince mankind to abandon war as a means of solving political disputes. Armistice Day was then designated as a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated.

The United States joins countries across the globe in remembering all the wars in which the United States has engaged, the bravery of the men and women who fought them, and the many sacrifices they and their families have made to secure freedom for Americans and peoples round the world. Armistice Day remembers not just those who fought, but also the freedoms for which they fought.
