Please Join Commissioner Hart Stebbins at Her Monthly Luncheon

05/28/2019

Bernalillo County Commission Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins would like to invite you to her next monthly neighborhood luncheon on Wednesday, June 12, from noon - 1 p.m. at the Bernalillo County-Wellesley Health Center, 3rd Floor Training Room, 2400 Wellesley NE. (New location this month!)

The speakers this month are Michelle Melendez, Director of Equity & Inclusion, and Mariela Ruiz-Angel, Office of Immigrant & Refugee Affairs Coordinator, for the city of Albuquerque.

In 1974, the Human Rights Office was established within Albuquerque city government. That Office was restructured into the Office of Equity and Inclusion by Mayor Keller to better address racial & physical disparities and to work for equal access & equitable opportunities for all people living in Albuquerque.

In 2016 the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs was created within the Office of Equity and Inclusion with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The goal of the office is to coordinate efforts to better serve immigrant and refugee residents.

In April 2018, City Council passed Resolution 18-7, reaffirming and declaring Albuquerque as an Immigrant Friendly City. This month, the city council passed a resolution allocating funds to provide humanitarian support for asylum seekers traveling through Albuquerque. Michelle and Mariela will discuss these issues and how the situation on the border is impacting the city.

This is a brown bag lunch. You bring a sandwich and we will provide the beverages. An RSVP to jhartley@bernco.gov is appreciated but not required.

Please feel free to share with your friends, neighbors and association memberships.
