Commission Proclaims First Week of April as "Community School Week"

03/16/2016

At its meeting on March 15, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners recognized the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Community School Partnership, its board members, staff, and partners who go above and beyond for their students, their schools, and their community and hereby proclaimed the first week of April as "Community School Week" in Bernalillo County.

In recognition of its unique organizational structure, innovative and successful work, the national Coalition for Community Schools has selected the Albuquerque Bernalillo County (ABC) Community School Partnership to serve as the host for the 2016 Community School National Forum, April 5-8.

Nearly 2,000 national and international students, parents, teachers, administrators, public policy and philanthropic leaders will attend the 2016 Community Schools National Forum to share community school best practices, strategies for growth and improvement.

The ABC Community School Partnership will be featured throughout the conference, providing participants an opportunity to learn about its highly successful and nationally recognized initiatives, such as the Homework Diner, and after school homework and family engagement programs, as well as the formal public-private collaboration that exists between the mayor of Albuquerque, the Albuquerque City Council, Bernalillo County Commission, Albuquerque Public Schools, United Way of Central New Mexico, and the Albuquerque Business Education Compact to sustain and guide the partnership.

The national Coalition for Community Schools will honor and recognize two outstanding local community school leaders during the 2016 National Forum, Amanda Reyes, a teacher and ABC Community School co-facilitator at Emerson Elementary School, and Peggy Candelaria, principal at Manzano Mesa Elementary School.

Both honorees were nominated by their peers for their respective leadership roles and commitment to creating a successful community school, from goal-setting to developing and implementing action plans that include and engage students, teachers, family members, school district personnel and community partners in developing programs and services that help students and families succeed in life and in school.

The Bernalillo County Commission welcomes the national Coalition for Community Schools and 2016 Community Schools National Forum attendees to Bernalillo County and proclaims the first week of April as Community School Week.
