Commissioner Hart Stebbins Hosts Reception for Traditional New Mexico Art


Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins is hosting a public reception for nine featured artists and their exhibition of traditional New Mexican artwork on Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m. in the City/County Government Center, 1 Civic Plaza, on the 10th floor, County Manager’s Suite.

The exhibition, “Art of Devotion,” is a contemporary showing of New Mexico colonial art by local artists, inspired by traditional Hispanic themes. Food and drink will be provided at the reception with an opportunity to meet the artists.

The reception includes works of retablos and bultos, decorative altars and statues of traditional religious iconography, with many other artworks. The artworks were made from materials and techniques developed out of the 200 years of New Mexico history.

The artists participating in the “Art of Devotion” exhibition are known for their variety of traditional artworks:

  • Adan Carriaga, retablos.
  • Charlie Carrillo, retablos.
  • Marie Luna, retablos.
  • Charlie Sanchez, straw applique.
  • Federico Prudencio, retablos.
  • Jerry Montoya, tinworks.
  • Vanessa Sanchez, straw applique.
  • Isaias Martin Lopez, retablos, bultos.
  • Nina Raby, bultos.
