County Commission to Recognize Donald Perkins

12/11/2017

On Tuesday, Dec 12, 2017, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners will proclaim 2018 as the Year of Don Perkins in Bernalillo County in honor of the University of New Mexico alumnus, Dallas Cowboy National Football League star, and dedicated community servant.

Donald A. Perkins is being recognized for his values of determination, humility and teamwork over his 60-year career since starting with the UNM Lobos in 1956. After playing for UNM and earning All-American honors, he had a stellar eight-year career with the Dallas Cowboys from 1961-1968, retiring early at the age of 30. In 1975, he was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame.

Perkins earned six Pro Bowl honors with the Cowboys, and retired with the fifth-most rushing yards in NFL history at the time. He was also instrumental in changing the Cowboy’s segregation policies in 1968.

After leaving the NFL, Donald Perkins has dedicated his time to community organizations including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the NAACP, and Albuquerque Police Department gang prevention initiatives. He has toured schools around the country to inspire and educate New Mexico’s young residents about the many successful paths their lives can take.

“Millions of people know Don Perkins for his spectacular athletic ability and football career and we honor him for that. But this proclamation also recognizes his love for the people of New Mexico and all he has done for this community as a role model and a community servant,” says Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins. “He deserves every aspect of this honor, and he continues to be an inspiration for all us who live in Bernalillo County.”

Perkins was born in Waterloo, Iowa in 1938, and moved to Bernalillo County in 1956 to play football for the University of New Mexico. After his career in the NFL, he returned to New Mexico where he raised his family and lives today.

The Board of County Commissioners will honor Don Perkins at its administrative meeting, Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. in the Vincent E. Griego Commission/Council Chambers, located in the basement of the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Government Center, One Civic Plaza NW. The public is invited.
