Bernalillo County Fire Department Completes Fire Engine Upgrades

01/16/2018

Bernalillo County will mark the final purchase of replacement engines for the county with a ceremony at Bernalillo County Fire Department Station 31, located at 9819 2nd Street NW in Alameda, on Friday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.

This engine is the 12th purchase of new fire trucks, one for each county fire station. The cost for this new engine and equipment is $645,000 and is the product of state legislative funds. Additional equipment, at a cost of $14,000 comes from Bernalillo County Fire Funds through the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

“This is just the latest in our commitment of safety and service to the residents of Bernalillo County.” says County Commission Vice Chair Lonnie Talbert. “I’m pleased that we have completed our promise to upgrade our equipment and will move forward from here.”

Part of the tradition for a new fire engine includes a “push in” ceremony where firefighters actually push the new engine into the firehouse. The practice originated during the time when horse drawn fire equipment was used and could not be easily backed into the building by the horses. Each time the equipment was used, the horses were washed down and the firefighting apparatus was pushed back into the station.

“The push-in ceremony is one of the many time-honored traditions you will see in the fire service,” says Interim Bernalillo County Fire Chief, Greg Perez. “Besides the historical relevance of this ceremony, this honors older and former members of the fire service and displays unity among the current members and showcases the importance of public safety to our community.”

In 2018, BCFD will be purchasing two additional engines, two rescue units and will receive a brush truck that was purchased in 2017.

Station 31, originally called Station 1, opened in 1958 and was the first fire station in Bernalillo County.
