National Work Zone Awareness Week Recognized

The Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners hereby recognizes the week of April 9, 2018 as National Work Zone Awareness Week and encourages Bernalillo County residents to keep employees, motorists and their families safe around work zones and on our roadways as our collective responsibility.

National Work Zone Awareness Week is an annual spring campaign, held at the start of construction season, to raise public awareness for street, road and highway work zones and those who work in them.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, each year, there are around 96,000 crashes in work zones in the United States and, on average, a work zone crash occurs once every 5.4 minutes.

National Work Zone Awareness Week is created in partnership with multiple organizations, such as the United States Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and others to continually raise awareness of work zone safety.

The theme for the 2018 National Work Zone Awareness Week from April 9–13, 2018 is “Work Zone Safety: Everybody’s Responsibility.”

The Bernalillo County Public Works Department strives to keep employees and the public safe during street, road and highway repairs in work zones.

Motorists are encouraged to slow down to posted speed limits, eliminate distractions while driving, and be watchful for roadway workers, their equipment and vehicles on the side of the road in work zones.
