Commission Declares Support for East Mountain Broadband Expansion

Commissioners have approved an administrative resolution declaring a commitment to East Mountain residents that Bernalillo County will do everything it can to catalyze broadband service improvements and expansion, including the pursuit of federal grants and properly procured telecommunications partners. The resolution also declares support for broadband legislation under consideration by the New Mexico Legislature.

“The board has resolved that we will work with federal, state and telecommunications partners and leverage key broadband stakeholders to improve and expand broadband service in the East Mountains,” says Commission Chair Charlene Pyskoty. “Meanwhile in Santa Fe, Senate Bill 93 would establish and fund an Office of Broadband Access and Expansion that will help to bring broadband solutions to rural and lower density populations. I urge residents seeking improved broadband to let your state legislators know that you support rural broadband initiatives.”

Bernalillo County staff has prepared an East Mountain Broadband FAQ to inform constituents of the challenges and opportunities for improved broadband service. There is a link on every page allowing constituents to send ideas, insights and additional questions for possible inclusion in the FAQ.

Commissioner Pyskoty has also facilitated an email service for East Mountain residents interested in the expansion of broadband services and other local issues. Residents who sign-up for the District 5 list will receive occasional updates by email. Click here to subscribe.

The resolution passed with a unanimous 5-0 vote.
