BernCo Urges Caution Using Fireworks This Holiday Weekend

Bernalillo County fire officials are urging caution this holiday weekend for anyone using fireworks to celebrate.

Fireworks are permitted within the unincorporated areas of Bernalillo County, outside the city limits, but must fit the following guidelines.

Permissible fireworks:

  • Ground and hand-held sparkling devices
  • Cone fountains
  • Crackling devices
  • Cylindrical fountains
  • Flitter sparklers
  • Ground spinners
  • Illuminating torches
  • Wheels

Aerial devices: Not permitted

  • Aerial shell kit-reloadable tubes
  • Aerial spinners
  • Helicopters
  • Mines
  • Missile-type rockets
  • Multiple tube devices
  • Roman candles
  • Shells
  • Stick-type rockets
  • Ground audible devices
  • Chasers
  • Firecrackers

Fireworks are never allowed in a national forest.

“The safety of county residents is the most important factor,” says District 5 Commissioner Charlene Pyskoty. “Residents need to be aware that while we’ve had some nice rains, fires can still happen at any time and precautions should be taken.”

If setting-off fireworks, use a clear area away from trees and brush, keep a bucket of water nearby as a fire precaution and properly extinguish and dispose of spent fireworks.

Violators of the county fireworks ordinance could face a fine up to $1000 and a year in jail, or both.
