Animal Care Services

The Bernalillo County Animal Care Services Department broke ground in July on the new Animal Care and Resource Center at 3001 2nd St. SW, between Woodward and Rio Bravo.

The center, which opened on Jan. 14, 2019, cost $7.8 million.

For information about adopting or other services, call (505) 314-0281 or (505) 468-PETS (468-7387).
Our temporary hours are Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and our pet viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Email us at animal@bernco.gov.

Some of the exciting new programs and services will include community volunteer opportunities, educational and training classes for people and animals, youth camp programs, and foster care and animal adoptions.

“We look forward to providing a space for the community to learn and network, enjoy positive experiences with various types of animals and engage with animal care professionals,” says Misha Goodman, BernCo Animal Care Services Department director.

The county will continue its enforcement function to ensure the health and safety of both people and animals within the community, assisting in reuniting people with their lost pets, as well as licensing and permitting of animals and animal establishments in Bernalillo County.

The county’s current animal care shelter is housed in an old county fire station and has served county staff well for a number of years but it was never designed or intended to house animals. In emergency situations, the county has been able to shelter animals there, but only for short periods of time. Additionally, BernCo contracts with the City of Albuquerque and out-of-town animal shelters to house its animals.
