Bernalillo County Assessor Kicks Off Veterans Outreach

This is the second year Bernalillo County Assessor Tanya R. Giddings has partnered with the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (NMDVS) to host a series of veteran outreach events at the BernCo Assessor’s Office located downtown at 501 Tijeras NW.

The first outreach kicks off on Dec. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the series of four events continues on the third Thursday of every month through March 2019.

Veterans and surviving spouses are invited to meet with county assessor staff to learn about the property tax saving programs available to them through the Assessor’s Office.

Two types of veterans' exemptions are available:

  • Service related exemption which gives a $4,000 reduction in taxable value of the property
  • 100 percent disabled exemption that relieves the veteran of all property taxes owed on their primary residence

“The purpose of these collaborative outreach events is to streamline the process and make it easier for veterans to apply for benefits they have earned,” says Tanya R. Giddings, Bernalillo County assessor. “By having the NMDVS on site, a veteran can come meet with a representative and learn about other state and federal benefits and resources available to them.”

Veterans need to bring their DD-214 or if they need assistance obtaining one, they should call Joseph Dorn with the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services at (505) 383-2414, go to www.nmdvs.org or visit with a representative in person at any these outreach events.

For questions or more information, call (505) 222-3700 or go to www.bernco.gov/assessor.

RSVP and share the Facebook event.
