To start the protest process in Bernalillo County, please:

  • Completely fill out the protest form, available at the County Assessor's office located at 501 Tijeras NW, or download the form below.
  • You may file a protest within 30 days from the date the notice of value was mailed.
  • The Assessor's Office will call you to schedule an informal meeting with a field appraiser within 30 days from the end of our protest period.
  • A formal hearing with the County Valuation Protest Board will be scheduled if the value is not resolved at the informal meeting.
  • If you do not agree with the board's decision, you may file an official appeal to District Court.

You are able to review your records regarding your protest at the Office of the Assessor; and, pursuant to NMSA 1978, Chapter 7-38-39 Claim for Refund, after receiving your property tax bill and after making payment prior to the delinquency date of all property taxes, you may file a claim for a refund in District Court.

*If you are filing an online protest, you will need to create a new account using the Access Code that is printed on your Notice of Value.

*Parking: To assist with downtown parking, there will be free parking in a designated parking lot during the protest period of April. The free parking is located in the alley, north of the Assessor’s Office. Access the lot on 5th St.
