Bernalillo County Treasurer’s Office Collects Over $19.8 Million in Delinquent Taxes

The Bernalillo County Treasurer’s Office announces the collection of more than $19.8 million in delinquent taxes from the 2020 property tax year. The Treasurer’s Office collected on approximately 32% of the outstanding tax notices.

Bernalillo County Treasurer Nancy Bearce says it’s important for the county to collect as much as possible before turning over delinquent tax properties to the State of New Mexico.  Once the properties are forwarded to the state for collection, all penalties and interest, as well as other fees, are retained by the state.

“We understand that taxpayers are in a crunch during these trying times. My staff works diligently with all constituents to bring their taxes current. This is important because this money goes to APS, UNM Hospital, CNM, City of Albuquerque and other taxing entities in our county,” says Bernalillo County Treasurer Nancy Bearce. “Our staff has worked hard to collect everything we can to keep public tax dollars in Bernalillo County.”

Property tax owners experiencing financial difficulties are encouraged to call 505-468-7031 or email the Treasurer’s Office at treasurers@bernco.gov to make payment arrangements. View property taxes online at bernco.gov/treasurer.

Mortgage assistance grants are available through the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority’s COVID-19 Homeowner Assistance Program.  The money can help homeowners pay past-due or current mortgage payments, for those experiencing a financial hardship because of COVID-19. The program provides emergency housing grants to income-eligible households and residents of tribal lands, up to $1,500 per month for a period of up to three (3) consecutive months, to maintain housing and/or to reduce housing cost delinquency.
