A: Thank you for asking. Absentee ballots are rejected if they are not completed according to the instructions. In short, the absentee ballot must be completed the same way whether it is mailed or hand delivered.

    • Clearly mark your choices on the absentee ballot.
    • Insert the ballot into the privacy envelope.
    • Insert the privacy envelope into the outer mailing envelope.
      • Sign the outer envelope where indicated under the privacy flap.
      • Enter the last 4 digits of your SSN where indicated under the privacy flap.
    • Seal the outer envelope.

Please share this information widely. Many are voting absentee for the first time and may not know that an absentee ballot must be prepared according to the instructions or it will be rejected. Click here for more information on returning your completed absentee ballot.

A: If you mail your absentee ballot from a Bernalillo County location on or before October 27, 2020, you can be confident that your ballot will arrive by 7 p.m. on Election Day, November 3, 2020. If you prefer, you're welcome to hand deliver it. After October 27, it is recommended that you hand-deliver your ballot. Please note that you must prepare the absentee ballot as if you were going to mail it, even if hand delivered. The clearly marked ballot must be inserted in the privacy envelope, insert the privacy envelope into the outer mailing envelope, sign and enter the last 4 digits of your SSN where indicated under the privacy flap and then seal the outer envelope.
