In the last U.S. presidential election in 2016, over 65 million potential voters reported being unable to vote due to not being registered. In a 2020 study by the Knight Foundation, more than one in four unregistered voters (27%) reported not being registered because they didn’t know how, they kept forgetting, they didn’t have time, were too busy, or they recently moved. Among unregistered voters ages 18-24, this number was even higher: 42%. National Voter Registration Day wants to make sure no one who wants to cast a ballot misses the opportunity due to a registration problem. Political parties and candidates tend to focus their outreach efforts on individuals with a track record of voting, thereby leaving out – and in turn, keeping out – many eligible voters from the political process.

On Tuesday, September 22, 2020, Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stover will join with thousands of other election officials across the country to celebrate National Voter Registration Day, a civic holiday that aims to help all eligible voters participate in our democracy. The nonpartisan day of action will involve coordinated field, technology, and media efforts to register voters and raise awareness of state-specific registration policies, deadlines, and voting information.

Please help us use this opportunity to encourage voter registration, raise awareness of voter registration options, and recruit election board members. Voter Registration agents and department staff will be present at 4 voting convenience centers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our staff and volunteers will all be wearing masks and social distancing and all participants are expected to do the same. Individuals without a NM Driver's License or state ID must register in person so this in-person registration is perfect for them

National Voter Registration Day is held on the fourth Tuesday of every September. Since 2012, nearly 3 million voters have registered on the holiday. The holiday has been endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and the National Association of Election Officials (The Election Center).
