BernCo Clerk Linda Stover Earns National Achievement Award for About My County Activity Book

Bernalillo County Clerk Linda Stover has been recognized with a 2020 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents.

NACo recognized Clerk Linda Stover for her program titled “About My County Activity Book” in the category of Civic Education and Public Information. The book is designed to introduce elementary school students to their own county government. Clerk Stover has lead the county’s outreach with a book tour through the schools and is encouraging students, parents and educators to invite county officials into classrooms to participate in the lessons.

Long-term measurable results will include students being inspired to public and civil service, young people being more knowledgeable about how their county government works, and a greater appreciation for the distinctions between Bernalillo County and City of Albuquerque services. Immediate measurable results include the embrace of the learning opportunity by students, educators and the community. Albuquerque Public Schools, among the top 40 largest school districts in the U.S., was moved to include the book in their curriculum and distribute it to all 4th graders in the system. That’s over 6,500 students at 91 elementary schools.

“I am delighted by this NACo Recognition,” said Clerk Linda Stover. “It is so important to teach civics to our children and inspire them to public service. Thank you NACo and Albuquerque Public Schools for your help in making this program a success.”

NACo President Mary Ann Borgeson said, “We are seeing firsthand now more than ever that counties work tirelessly to support our residents. This year’s Achievement Award-winning programs showcase how counties build healthy, safe and vibrant communities across America.”

Nationally, awards are given in 18 different categories that reflect the vast, comprehensive services counties provide. The categories include children and youth, criminal justice and public safety, county administration, information technology, health, civic engagement and many more.

Started in 1970, NACo’s annual Achievement Awards program is designed to recognize county government innovations. Each nominee is judged on its own merits and not against other applications received.
