Call for Art for Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square Photography

Eligibility: Residents of New Mexico, 18 years or older
Award: $1500 for each selected photograph, with a limit of one photograph per nominated photographer.

Project Description:

The Bernalillo County Arts Board issues a call for photographers to submit photographs to be used as part of the interior design of Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square, the new home for Bernalillo County government offices. The building is located at 415 Silver Avenue SW 87102 and will house 800-1000 county employees and the Board of County Commissioners, as well as provide services to the general public.

The selection committee for the project will choose eight (8) photographs from the submissions to be reproduced in black and white at a large scale and featured on the walls of the facility’s elevator lobbies. Additional photographs may be selected and reproduced as one-way perforated film for the exterior glazing of the windows of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) Suite, located on Silver Avenue between 4th Street and 5th Street at the Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square facility.

Additionally, a framed copy of each selected photograph will become part of the Bernalillo County Public Art Program’s permanent collection and will be displayed in publically accessible areas of the Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square facility.

This is a local call open to photographers living in the State of New Mexico who are 18 years of age or older. Photographers working in all processes including digital, silver, and alternative processes are invited to submit. Submissions are limited to no more than five (5) photographs per artist.

The Board will consider subjects including but not limited to people, places, landscapes and events within Bernalillo County. Images that are culturally relevant and evoke the spirit and character of Bernalillo County will be considered.

Site Details:

Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square, 415 Silver Avenue SW 87102, is an eight story building centrally located in downtown Albuquerque. The County is working towards LEED and Fitwel certification for the building, and once completed, Alvarado Square will be the first of its kind in the entire state.

County departments that will be housed in the Bernalillo County @ Alvarado Square center include: the Board of County Commissioners; County Manager; Economic Development; Community Services; Parks, Recreation, and Open Space; TV Production; Sheriff; County Clerk; Treasurer; Assessor; Probate Judge; Planning and Development; Indigent Services; Fire Marshal; Public Works; Internal Affairs; Information Technology; Finance; General Services; and Legal.

The Bernalillo County Arts Board is guided by the following mission: “Public art has the power to inspire curiosity, encourage contemplation, facilitate dialogue, foster community engagement, and create a sense of place. Located throughout the county, the Bernalillo County public art collection enhances quality of life through the acquisition of exceptional works of art by artists at various career stages.”

Project Intent/Theme:

The intent of the project is to enhance the facility and create a welcoming environment for customers, Bernalillo County employees, and the general public. Images that are culturally relevant and evoke the spirit and character of Bernalillo County will be considered.

Media/Style/Size:

The call is for photographs taken in Bernalillo County. The reproduced photographs will be located on the north elevator lobby wall of each floor. They will be applied as acrylic with the image printed and laminated between layers approximately one-half to one inch thick. Photographers should be aware that part of the reproduced photograph on the elevator lobby wall will be obscured by the floor number, as seen below.

If selected, photographers must provide a digital version of their photograph with a resolution of between 150 – 300 ppi (pixels per inch) to ensure high-quality reproduction of the images to a larger scale.

In addition to a digital version, selected photographers are required to deliver an archival-quality print of their photograph to be custom framed. The photograph should be mounted on either foam core or double mat board at a 20” x 24” size, at the photographer’s expense. Bernalillo County will be responsible for the cost of framing the photographs.

Timeframe*:

  • Photograph selection and awards: September-October 2020
  • Digital images of selected of photographs must be delivered for reproduction by December 31, 2020
  • January-February 2021: Delivery of printed photographs for framing
  • Installation of reproduced photographs in elevator lobbies: March 2021

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Deadline: Emailed submissions must be received by August 31 (11:59pm MST) and mailed submissions must be postmarked before August 31.

What to Submit:

  1. Images. Submit NO MORE than 5 different photographs in JPEG format. (See below for size limitations)
  2. Written proposal in Word document format. Please include your name on each page of the document. (3 pages maximum). Please include:
  • Contact information: Address, phone #, email, and website if applicable.
  • Artist statement and biography:
    • A brief description of your photographic work, style, and how your artwork connects with the diverse cultures and traditions of the Bernalillo County. A short artist biography should also be included.
  • A list of the images: For each photograph, include the artist’s name, artwork title, dimension/size, media, and date of creation.

  • Ensure that your email does not exceed 12 MG in a single email. If you send multiple emails to accommodate your submission, please include in the subject area of your email your last name and the sequence. (Example: Attn. Alvarado Photography, Smith 1 of 3)
  • Follow up if you have not received an acknowledgement of receipt within 5 business days.
