Mobile Market Brings New Fresh Food Options, Nutrition to Neighborhoods

Take a ride with the Mobile Market to better health!

A new pilot program called the Mobile Market is rolling out Aug. 4, 2015 to bring fresh food to underserved neighborhoods in Bernalillo County.

“Bernalillo County is proud to partner with the Healthy Here Coalition and bring fresh fruits and vegetables to underserved neighborhoods in the International District at affordable prices,” Commission Chair Maggie Hart Stebbins says.

“The Mobile Market project supports good nutrition, better access to fresh produce and our local farmers, which are all critical to a strong and sustainable community,” says Commissioner Debbie O’Malley, a strong supporter of local agriculture.

The Mobile Market offers cooking and nutrition classes in addition to bringing locally-grown produce to food deserts, or neighborhoods where healthy food is hard to find. The Mobile Market accepts cash, credit, EBT Cash Cards and EBT SNAP.

The Mobile Market will be at First Nations Community Healthcare, 5608 Zuni Road SE, from 12 - 2 p.m. Aug. 4, 2015.

The Mobile Market will be at the University of New Mexico’s Southeast Heights Clinic, 8200 Central Ave. SE, from 3 - 5 p.m. on Aug. 4, 2015.

The Mobile Market will visit the International District at the above locations on the following dates:

Aug. 4 and 18; Sept. 1, 15 and 29; and Oct. 13.

In addition to the International District location, the van will visit the South Valley throughout the season.

South Valley locations include Presbyterian Medical Group clinic, 3436 Isleta Blvd. SW, from 12-2 p.m.; and the First Choice Community Healthcare, 2001 El Centro Familiar Blvd. SW, from 3-5 p.m.

South Valley dates include Aug. 11 and 25; Sept. 8 and 22; and Oct. 6 and 20.

Funding for this project comes from Bernalillo County and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Additionally, Bernalillo County provided the van, a 2006 Dodge Sprinter, an employee to staff the program and about $9,000 in improvements to make the vehicle usable for this project.

Partners involved in creating the Mobile Market include Bernalillo County; Presbyterian Healthcare Services; the Agri-cultura Network; Street Food Institute; Storehouse New Mexico and the Bernalillo County Community Health Council.
