Here in Bernalillo County, we've made sure that there's plenty of family-style fun for all ages this autumn!

Open Space

Bernalillo County’s award-winning Open Space program features year-round events, educational seminars, and family and youth programming. There are twelve unique properties from the mountains to the valley – we invite you to visit our wide-open spaces! Please visit our county-wide Open Space events calendar for more information on events and our open space properties.

Some Open Space highlights:

  • Backyard Farming Series: Held at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House and Cultural Center, these workshops provide hands-on experiences, giving participants practical information on how to transform their backyard into an urban oasis of food, medicine and wildlife habitat.
  • Naturalist Series: Held at Bachechi Open Space, this series will awaken the senses to the natural world through intentional observations and discovering the unique bosque ecosystem. This series is developed in partnership with the Museum of Southwestern Biology.
  • Stories of the Middle Rio Grande: A series that brings to life the rich history and cultural traditions of the Albuquerque area along the Rio Grande. This year's series has been focusing on the origin of the original Spanish neighborhoods, and is developed in partnership with Historic Albuquerque, Inc.
  • Interpretive Series: This program offers walking tours of Open Space properties while presenting on the historical, cultural and environmental significance of the area.
  • Prescription Trails: This program developed a prescription tool and walking guide to increase walking and wheelchair rolling on suggested routes, meant to target and promote healthy lifestyles for families. Prescription Rx Walking Trails are located at Open Space properties around the county.
