BernCo Adds 15 New Land Management Positions as Part of Glyphosate Replacement Option

05/29/2019

The Board of Commissioners approved a motion tonight to hire 15 new full-time employees for the Bernalillo County Parks, Recreation, & Open Space Department, Land Management Section, budgeting $1.06 million for the glyphosate replacement initiative.

The new positions will assist with the projected changes needed for the implementation of a plan to halt the usage of the chemical glyphosate for weed eradication in the county.

A study is underway, that includes staff and citizens, to create an integrated vegetation maintenance management plan that will be implemented for Bernalillo County parks, trails, and open space properties.

"The additional positions will help current land management staff in the cleaning, mowing of grass and weeds, needle pickup and general upkeep of the county properties,” says BernCo Parks and Recreation Director Debbie Jo Almager.

The new positions include:

  • Mechanic (one)
  • Administrative officer I (one)
  • Park maintenance worker I transitioning to park maintenance worker II in fiscal year 2021 with certifications (13)

The new positions will bring ratios of acres maintained to one employee to 35 acres for developed parks and one employee to 100 acres for open space properties.
