Arenal Open Space

Project Scope

The Parks, Recreation and Open Space Facility Master Plan identified acquisition and improvement of agricultural lands north of Rio Bravo as one of the top 15 most important projects.

In 2015, the county entered into a purchase agreement for the acquisition of the former Swendson Dairy (phase 1) and appurtenant pre-1907 water rights (phase 2) using new Open Space Mill Levy Funds from fiscal year 2016 ($1,350,000) and fiscal year 2017 ($350,000). The county then purchased the adjacent Zagar property for $650,000 (phase 3) at the end 2016 using fiscal year 2017 funds. These properties have been fenced by the county and will remain agricultural with a trail and other improvements that will come out of a Master Plan and Management Plan that will be undertaken in 2018. In the spring of 2017, the county entered into negotiations to purchase an additional adjacent property on the east side of the irrigation ditch, which is proposed to become an incubator farm site (phase 4).
