    About the Property

Valle del Bosque is a 17-acre hybrid park, Little League facility, and Open Space property located at 480 Sunset SW. It is adjacent to the Rio Grande Bosque and provides access to the Rio Grande Valley State Park with an overlook above the river. It was the site of the Serna Trucking Company until 2001, when Bernalillo County purchased the property for recreational uses with funds from the Open Space mill levy. Previous uses made the land a brownfield site and it was enrolled in the New Mexico Environment Department’s Voluntary Remediation Program (VRP). All site remediation was completed in late 2002.

    Planning and Management

An extensive planning effort with the Vecinos del Bosque Neighborhood Association and the Atrisco Valley Little League resulted in a phased master plan that was adopted by the county. Phases I, II, and III were completed between 2005-2008 and included a playground, ball field, turf, landscaping, irrigation, picnic shelters and furnishings, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, walking trail, parking, and reconstruction of the acequia for flood irrigation of the Open Space at the eastern portion of the site. In 2007, the community participated in a pole planting effort of more than 50 cottonwood and willow trees.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed a bridge over the clear ditch, just outside the facility’s eastern boundary, which leads directly to the Rio Grande Bosque and a boardwalk that overlooks the Rio Grande. In 2008, 1.5 acres along the eastern boundary were added to the site. Overgrown vegetation was thinned and existing cottonwood trees were pruned to promote the growth of understory plants and grasses.
