County Commission Supports Adding Albuquerque Public School District to Intergovernmental Commission

11/14/2018

The County Commission voted to support an amendment to the Albuquerque/ Bernalillo County Government Commission (ABCGC) intergovernmental agreement to include Albuquerque Public Schools as part of its membership.

Since 1999, the Albuquerque/ Bernalillo County Government Commission has worked to promote coordination and cooperation between the city and county.

The ABCGC is currently comprised of four county commissioners, four city councilors and the mayor. The members of the ABCGC serve one-year terms.

The proposed intergovernmental amendment would formalize the inclusion of APS by adding two school board members to the Albuquerque/ Bernalillo County Government Commission.

“The ABCGC recognizes the importance of the school district’s involvement in matters affecting the community,” says Commission Chair Steven Michael Quezada. “Direct collaboration among the county, city and APS, when it matters the most, is a victory for the entire community.”

The City Council will hear the amendment at its Nov. 19 council meeting and the Board of Education will hear the amendment at its meeting on Dec. 5.

All three entities have to approve the amendment before it’s effective.

The County Commission approved the intergovernmental agreement on a 5 - 0 vote.
