Behavioral Health Services Expansion to Increase Services to Over 14,000 Residents

The Department of Behavioral Health Services begins the start of construction for the $5 million CARE Campus expansion in southeast Albuquerque, New Mexico. The expansion will help expand the campus services to be inclusive of mental health treatment and drug and alcohol services. The campus will provide comprehensive behavioral health services 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

“Over the past five years, we have built an inclusive behavioral health system, launching more than 13 programs dedicated to providing a wide range of services from crisis situations to peer-supports. We are well on our way to creating a behavioral health system that meets peoples need and surrounds them with proven programs, giving them the best chance at recovery and resilience,” says County Manager Julie Morgas Baca.

The expansion will feature a 2,200-square foot one-stop-shop with the following services: detox, behavioral health observation and assessment unit, out-patient behavioral health clinic, a dedicated training space, 24-hour intake, and a peer-run living room program. These additional services will complement the services currently offered at the CARE Campus.

“After months of design coordination between Bernalillo County leadership, their consultants, and CARE administrators, we are excited to participate in this milestone event. The renovations will begin a two-part improvement to the CARE Campus. When complete, this facility will have a new detox wing accommodating up to 48 people, an expanded short-term observation and assessment floor for up to 60 people, a publicly accessed peer counseling area, and an out-patient clinic for follow-up and referred care. Other renovations and additions will provide new offices for administrators and clinicians and a large multiple-purpose lecture hall for conferences and training,” says Studio South West Senior Architect Robert Maze.

The renovations are expected to be completed in October of 2021.

The Bernalillo County CARE Campus is dedicated to the continuum of care for individuals living with substance use addictions and mental health conditions. From homelessness to public safety, access to quality behavioral health care within the community is integral, and is offered in the heart of the International District.
