County Manager Eases Single-Use Plastic Bag Restrictions

06/26/2020

Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca is extending her order suspending the single-use plastic bag ban until she rescinds the order. The original order, in late March, eased restrictions for 60 days.

The order came via the Bernalillo County emergency management ordinance approved by the County Commission at its March 10 emergency meeting giving the county manager authority to make decisions regarding county operations during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“In the interest of safety and striving to curb the spread of the coronavirus, I’m allowing the use of single-use plastic bags until further notice,” says Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca. “But I am highly recommending the use of paper bags during this time.”

The single-use bags are most frequently used by restaurants and retail establishments and should cut down on the possible spread of COVID 19 which can live on reusable bags, if they are not washed immediately after contamination.
