County Commission Approves New BCSO Union Contract

01/24/2018

The Bernalillo County Commission has approved a new contract with the Bernalillo County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, the union representing all deputies and uniformed employees.

The agreement addresses multiple pay components including an 8 percent pay raise. Also included in the agreement is a one-time payout of $3,000 to every union member.

“This approval should help with recruitment and retention for the department as well as improve the quality of life for all those employees this contract affects. I appreciate the patience and sacrifices our deputies have made for this well-deserved pay increase,” says Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III.

County Manager Julie Morgas Baca says this is another win for the county. “This new pay rate is a big step in bringing our deputies more in line with other law enforcement agencies in the state.”

The financial impact to the county is $2.1 million annually in recurring funds and $738,000 for the one-time payout.

The 8 percent pay increase is retroactive to July 1, 2017 and the lump sum payment will show up on paychecks the first pay period of fiscal year 2019, beginning July 1, 2018.

Additionally, the contract allows for new recruits to apply and enter the academy at 20 years of age, but they must be 21 years old at the time of their graduation.

The contract was overwhelmingly approved by union membership.
