County Commission Approves Raises for Elected Officials

County Commissioners and other elected officials will be getting a bump in their salaries beginning in January of 2019.

Elected county officials whose term of office begins on Jan. 1, 2019 are eligible for the salary increase. Midterm elected county officials will be eligible for the increase Jan. 1, 2021.

Elected county officials beginning a new term of office include county commissioners from Districts 1 and 5, the assessor, probate judge and sheriff. These officials will be eligible for the increase on Jan. 1, 2019. All other elected officials will not receive the raise until Jan. 1, 2021.

“We have not had the opportunity to give our elected public servants a pay increase since 2006,” says County Manager Julie Morgas Baca. “The County is now in a position to give these increases and honor those who run for office and serve the residents of this great County.”

Below are the current and approved salaries, by position:

Position Current Salary    Approved Salary
County Commissioner     $29,569 $39,106
Treasurer $65,501 $86,626
Assessor $65,501 $86,626
Sheriff $68,308 $90,338
Clerk $65,501 $86,626
Probate Judge $28,820 $38,144

The last salary increase for elected officials was approved by the Board of County Commissioners on Dec. 12, 2006 and was effective on Jan. 1, 2007 for the first five elected officials and Jan. 1, 2009 for the remaining five elected officials.

The measure was approved by the commission on a 4 to 1 vote with Commissioner James E. Smith voting against.
