County Laid 85 to Rest Tuesday

2:18 PM

Bernalillo County honored 85 people Tuesday in a special burial ceremony at Evangelico Cemetery.

The ceremony was organized by the Bernalillo County Unclaimed/Indigent Cremation Program, which steps in when deceased persons of Bernalillo County are unclaimed and are of indigent status and family members have no means to cremate them.

The program is run by the Bernalillo County Purchasing Department and provides a dignified repose for those whose loved ones can’t afford to lay them to rest and those that the County is not able to locate next of kin, which are classified as unclaimed.

The cremated remains of all the unclaimed/indigent decedents were buried in a single coffin after a short graveside service in the cemetery at Blake and Coors.

Pastor David Goodnight from Jesus First Church and Deacon Pablo LeFebre from St. Anne Catholic Church gave eulogies.

District 2 Commissioner Art De La Cruz and District 4 Commissioner Lonnie Talbert also attended and spoke at the service.

Flowers, music, flags and final words from loved ones rounded out the ceremony. The county also printed a program listing the names of each person buried.

Last year the county buried 182 unclaimed/indigent residents in a similar ceremony at Evangelico.

Purchasing Director Lisa Sedillo-White and Unclaimed/Indigent Program Coordinators Danielle Romero and Rachel Maestas administer the program and arranged for yesterday’s service.

Under their direction, Bernalillo County also just launched a new webpage on its BernCo View transparency site which allows the public to search for unclaimed/indigent deceased persons from the county who have been cremated.

In addition, to the ability to search unclaimed deceased persons of Bernalillo County, in-depth information regarding the Unclaimed/Indigent Cremation Program is also available to the public on BernCo View.
