Bernalillo County Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department is responsible for creating and providing recreation, leisure, community services and facilities necessary to promote public well-being and quality of life for youth, adults, senior citizens and special populations in Bernalillo County.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

  • Responsible for planning, designing and constructing capital improvement projects for parks, open space, community centers, and aquatic facilities
  • Prepare funding requests for State of New Mexico legislative capital outlay, county general obligation bond funding and other grant funding sources. Track and administer capital funding, provide grant assistance to department and county administration, and meet reporting requirements for Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) database
  • Provide comments on County Development Review Authority and County Planning Commission and other specially designated commission (e.g. Arts Commission, Memorial Commission, etc.) submittals as they affect park, recreation, open space, and trail facilities

COMMUNITY FITNESS

  • Aquatic's program provides swim lessons, open swim, water aerobics, pool/spray park rentals, lap swimming, swim team, masters swimming and Red Cross lifeguard training instruction
  • The sports program provides league opportunities for youth and adults, such as basketball, softball, and running

COMMUNITY RECREATION

  • Provides various programs and activities for youth and adults such as the Before and After School Programs, Summer Recreation Program, Parky’s Pals Pre-School Recreation Program, Spring/Winter Break Camp, Back to School Camp, programs for Department of Behavioral Health Services (DBHS) participants, teen programming, aerobics and fitness classes, dance instruction, arts and crafts, and ceramics
  • South Valley Multi-purpose Senior Center (SVMPSC) is a senior meal site as well as offering ceramics, fitness center, sewing room, computer lab, and programs for Department of Behavioral Health Services (DBHS) participants, medical clinics for seniors and multi-generational programming and partnered with the State of New Mexico Juvenile Probation Office (JPO) and New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD)

LAND MANAGEMENT

  • Responsible for the maintenance and improvement of more than 1,000 acres of parks, athletic fields, little league complexes, streetscapes, trails, county facility landscapes, and over 1,600 acres of open space properties consisting of trails, agricultural lands and forestry lands
  • Provide landscape construction and redevelopment of turf, facility landscapes, playgrounds, shade structures, athletic fields, streetscapes, xeriscape, and irrigation systems for all Bernalillo County facilities
  • Conduct certified safety inspections to include playground audits, site inspections, soil analysis, and water audits ensuring all applicable safety standards and water consumption ordinances are met
  • Manage and coordinate set-up of tents, tables, chairs, and site preparation in support of county special events, ceremonies, and functions
