    As a service of the Board of County Commissioners, Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for creating and providing recreation, leisure, community services and facilities necessary to promotepublic well-being and quality of life for youth, adults, senior citizens and special populations in Bernalillo County.


    • Provides sports, aquatic, and community fitness programs in Bernalillo County.
    • Manage one indoor year-round aquatic facility, Rio Grande County Pool, and four seasonal facilities; Los Padillas, Paradise Hills, South Valley, and Alameda Spray Park.
    • The Aquatics program provides swim lessons, open swim, water aerobics, pool/spray park rentals, senior water aerobics, lap swimming, swim team, Masters Swimming and Red Cross Lifeguard training instruction.
    • Manage two fitness facilities; Rio Grande Fitness Center and Union Square Fitness Center.
    • The Sports Program provides league opportunities for youth and adults, such as youth basketball, adult softball, adult basketball, youth and adult running.


    • Provides various programs and activities for youth and adults such as the Before and After School Programs, Summer Recreation Program, Parky’s Pals Pre-School Recreation Program, teen programming, aerobics and fitness classes, dance instruction, arts and crafts, and ceramics.
    • All youth programs incorporate inclusive recreation opportunities, allowing participants with and without disabilities to participate together.
    • Three community centers Raymond G. Sanchez Community Center (RGSCC), Los Vecinos Community Center (LVCC), Paradise Hills Community Center (PHCC), house senior citizen meal-site programs and all Centers are used to host a variety of community organizations, events, sports leagues and meetings.
    • South Valley Multi-purpose Senior Center (SVMPSC) is a senior meal site as well as offering ceramics, fitness center, sewing room, computer and clinics for seniors.


    • Responsible for the maintenance and improvement of more than 1,000 acres of parks, athletic fields, little league complexes, streetscapes, trails, county facility landscapes, and over 1,000 acres of open space properties.
    • Provide landscape construction and redevelopment of turf, xeriscape, and irrigation systems for all Bernalillo County facilities.
    • Conduct certified safety inspections to include playground audits, site inspections, soil analysis, and water audits ensuring all applicable safety standards and water consumption ordinances are met.
    • Manage and coordinate set-up of tents, tables, chairs, and site preparation in support of county special events, ceremonies, and functions.


    • Responsible for serving as the steward for Bernalillo County’s cultural and historical assets.
    • Comprised of the Public Art Program, Teen Program, Special Programs, Special Events, and Open Space.
    • Offers countywide special events and teen programming; owns 325 pieces of public art, manages and provides programs for 11 Open Space properties, and has contributed funding for the protection of other significant public lands.
    • Responsible for promotion and outreach of events and activities through videography services and coordinated marketing outreach efforts.


    • Responsible for planning, designing and constructing capital improvement projects for parks, open space, community centers, and aquatic facilities.
    • Prepare funding requests for State of New Mexico legislative capital outlay, county general obligation bond funding and other grant funding sources. Track and administer capital funding, provide grant assistance to department and county administration, and meet reporting requirements for CIP database.
    • Provide comments on county development review authority and County Planning Commission and other specially designated commission (e.g. Arts Commission, Memorial Commission, etc.) submittals as they affect park, recreation, open space, and trail facilities.
