It has been a two-year process in getting BCFD’s new ladder truck 38 built and officially placed into service. This unit will serve the community in the South Valley at Station 38 off of Rio Bravo and Prince. Last year Station 38 crews responded to 3,196 calls for service.
This unit will serve as the primary ladder truck for the South Valley responding to every structure fire that is dispatched in that region. It will also be the primary suppression and rescue apparatus responding to the I-25 corridor stretching from Sunport Blvd. to Isleta Blvd. It will also be an available resource for automatic aid response in the city of Albuquerque.
Ladder truck 38 was funded through the public safety tax that allocates $1.4 million a year for fleet purchases. This unit was funded in Bernalillo County’s Fiscal Year 2019. Total cost was $1,270,00.24 to include all the firefighting equipment that is stocked on the unit. Over 80 specialty items were purchased for this apparatus so BCFD firefighters can do their job safely and efficiently. Some critical equipment included in the cost were vehicle extrication equipment, rescue jacks, fire hose, nozzles, chain saws, and forcible entry tools.
New ladder truck 38 has a 105 foot ladder stick which is 30 feet longer than the previous unit. It also has a 500 gallon water tank with a 2000 GPM Pump; an upgraded foam system that can be discharged at the tip of the ladder through the waterway system; something the previous unit could not accommodate. The cab configuration was built with a larger compartment design for a more conducive working space inside the cab and to hold EMS equipment. Ladder truck 38 was built to stay in compliance with the “Clean Cab” Initiative that was launched three years ago; keeping firefighters dirty contaminated gear out of the cab.
Bernalillo County Fire wants to extend a special thanks to BCFD’s Logistics Division, fire mechanics, and Lieutenant Isaac Rowe for their dedication in designing this ladder truck with Pierce Manufacturing. BCFD is honored to officially place “new ladder truck 38” into service.
