Mesa del Sol Championship Field to See First Competitive Action - New Mexico United to Scrimmage on Saturday

8:31 PM

Bernalillo County – The New Mexico United professional soccer team will take to the championship field at the Mesa del Sol complex on Saturday, March 20 for a scrimmage game.

Fans will be allowed at the game with attendance not to exceed 350 including players and staff.  The game is sold out and the United is responsible for adherence to the state public health order.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome professional soccer to Mesa del Sol,” says Bernalillo County Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada.  “This is the perfect match for Bernalillo County and the New Mexico United.”

The championship field was a recently completed addition at Mesa del Sol and offers a championship quality playing surface to the complex.  The New Mexico United soccer franchise recently signed an agreement with Bernalillo County for use of the field for practice.  Additionally, the United has the option of using the field for competition.

The Mesa del Sol complex and the amphitheater are operated by Bernalillo County under an agreement with the New Mexico State Land Office.  The land is owned by the state and leased to the county.

“In just a few years, New Mexico United have taken our state and our soccer fans by storm, and we’re so proud to have their first scrimmage of the 2021 season taking place on state trust land. The State Land Office exists to benefit New Mexico’s vital public institutions, and because of that, some of the proceeds from tomorrow’s scrimmage will benefit the University of New Mexico. I can’t imagine a better way to kick-off a season than raising revenue for our Lobos. In New Mexico, we are all United, Somos Unidos!” says New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands Stephanie Garcia Richard.
The county and state are currently in negotiations on a new lease.  Additionally, the county has an existing service contract with Live Nation to manage the Isleta Amphitheater.
