BSCO, BCFD To Host Community Meeting on Wildfires


The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BSCO) in conjunction with the Bernalillo County Fire Department (BCFD) and the Bernalillo County Office of Emergency Management will host a community meeting at the Sheriff’s East Area Command Center- James McGrane Public Safety Center on Wednesday, June 28 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss each of our agency roles, responses and responsibilities during a wildfire.

This community meeting will consist of an open discussion with attendees on what the role of our respective agencies is during an evacuation and how citizens can prepare and be informed when an evacuation order related to a wildfire is issued.

Some topics will include:

- How the Sheriff's Office determines an evacuation order

- Legal issues of issuing the order

- The safety concerns if a citizen refuses to evacuate

- How refusal can impact firefighting efforts

- What to bring during an evacuation

- How shelters work

- How the Sheriff's Office secures property and neighborhoods when an evacuation is ordered

This meeting is sure to be very informative and beneficial to all residents. Even if you don’t reside in the East Mountains, information shared can be used in any area of the state as recently witnessed with the range fire that occurred just west of Rio Rancho City limits.
