Metropolitan Detention Center

Chief of Corrections Ralph Fernandez officially took over the reins at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in November, 2018 following the retirement of Chief Greg Rees. Chief Fernandez is originally from Las Cruces, NM and has dedicated his life to the safety and security of New Mexico’s communities, through his commitment to the corrections industry. Chief Fernandez has nearly 24 years of experience in corrections. He spent 21 years with the New Mexico Department of Corrections, retiring as a captain of security. In 2016, he moved to MDC as a use-of-force consultant, hired by the late Manuel Romero, who served as a MDC operations auditor for the U.S. District Court in the McClendon lawsuit. In September 2017 Chief Rees hired Fernandez as his deputy chief of security. Chief Fernandez is excited to take on this new challenge, leading MDC in its continued mission to provide a safe and secure facility for our inmates and staff.
