MDC Inmate Tests Positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19)

A Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) inmate has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19). The jail learned of the positive test yesterday. The inmate is isolated at MDC receiving treatment from the jail’s medical team.

The 39-year old male inmate was booked into MDC last Thursday, March 26. Upon entry, the inmate was appropriately screened and did not have COVID-19 symptoms.

Two days after arriving at MDC, the jail was informed that the inmate’s mother was hospitalized and tested positive for COVID-19. The inmate had been caring for his mother prior to being booked in MDC. After learning of this information, the jail moved the inmate into an isolation cell and proceeded with a 14-day quarantine of inmates in two housing pods where the exposed inmate had been housed.

Four MDC staff who came in contact with the inmate are also self-isolating at home for 14 days, as a precaution.

All other inmates are being monitored for symptoms of COVID-19, to date no one else has presented with the symptoms.

The jail is continuing its stringent practices to reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure at MDC. Those practices include screening every inmate and staff entering the facility; increased disinfecting throughout the jail; mandatory handwashing for anyone entering the facility.
