BernCo Launches Search for Permanent Jail Chief

Bernalillo County is searching for a permanent jail chief that will continue the county’s progress on reforming the Metropolitan Detention Center, County Manager Julie Morgas Baca announced today.

The county has successfully reduced the inmate population, is continually working on improving medical care, overhauling mental health services and improving staff and inmate safety, among other reforms. This work led to last year’s settlement agreement between the county and plaintiffs in a long-standing federal lawsuit about living conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

“Bernalillo County is committed to becoming a national leader on jail and mental health reform, which saves tax dollars and improves public safety,” County Manager Julie Morgas Baca says. “We’re looking for a permanent jail chief who will continue to make safety a priority for the Metropolitan Detention Center staff and inmates, while also focusing on efficiency, transparency and accountability to the community we serve.”

The job opening was announced earlier this week. Interim Jail Administrator Tom Ruiz has managed and stabilized the jail since July 2016. Ruiz will help train the new chief and continue to work at the jail to support the county manager’s mission to improve the Metropolitan Detention Center for staff, inmates and taxpayers.

The job description is posted on several job sites and can also be viewed on Bernalillo County's website.
