MDC Receives 100-percent Accreditation Score

The American Correctional Association has found the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in 100-percent compliance with 59 mandatory and 308 non-mandatory standards for correctional facilities - the highest score ever received by MDC.

“The Metropolitan Detention Center’s scores show the excellent work done by our MDC staff each day, to serve the community in line with industry standards,” says County Manager Julie Morgas Baca. “I congratulate all MDC staff and Chief Greg Rees for their continued and outstanding performance.”

The 59 mandatory standards measured crucial MDC functions, including:

· Clear exits in case of evacuation.

· Licensing of all professional staff.

· Certified access to clean water.

· Controlled use of tools and culinary equipment.

· 24-hour access to emergency medical services.

The 308 non-mandatory standards measured further operations, such as:

· Safe and secure transport of inmates.

· Initial classification of inmates for safety and security.

· Access to a qualified chaplain.

· Opportunities for citizen and volunteer involvement.

· Compliance with federal, state and local building codes.

Non-compliance in any of the 59 mandatory standards would result in a failing score for the entire audit.

The audit was conducted last week by audit chairperson Nancy Dobbs of Arkansas, auditor Anne Cybulski-Sandlian of Arizona and auditor David Peek of Georgia.

Accreditation by the American Correctional Association is granted after review by the Commission on Accreditation.

MDC will receive its formal accreditation during the American Correctional Association Winter Conference in January 2018 in Orlando, FL.

“Our goal at MDC is to adhere to the highest professional expectations of health and safety,” says MDC Chief Greg Rees. “I am very proud of our staff for the hard work they put in every day to make MDC the absolute best facility it can possibly be.”

The American Correctional Association audit process is voluntary for correctional facilities around the country. The Metropolitan Detention Center believes continued accreditation ensures professional and humane treatment of inmates, staff and members of the community who volunteer at MDC.
